Blackberries
(Rubus fruticosus)
Blackberries or bramble berries grow in the wild as well as being cultivated. A perennial that grows like a loony with pretty white flowers followed by green fruit that goes red then black… oh and the whole plant is covered in nasty spikes.
The black berry is a bit of a magical all rounder when it comes to the elements as the berries are ruled by the element of earth, the leaves ruled by Venus and water and the thorns are Aries and fire.
Blackberries promote prosperity, I assume because of the speed the plant grows and the amount of fruit it produces.
The spikes on the plant give it the magical energy of protection and if you can brave the scratches blackberry branches make a good protective wreath for your home.
The amount of berries produced and the amount of seeds contained in the fruit also gives it the magical energy of fertility.
Eat or bake into pies and cakes to utilise the magical properties but if you want to use the power of blackberry in medicine pouches and incense blends use the dried leaf or root … it’s less messy…
Folklore says that passing under an archway of brambles will cure all manner of afflictions including pimples and boils.
Blackberries are also a fruit of the Faerie world.
Folklore also states that blackberries will protect you against spirits and vampires…I have not tried this, having never met a vampire (well not knowingly anyway).
Dreaming of blackberries can mean loss or sorrow and if you are pricked by a blackberry thorn in your dream it means your enemies are conspiring against you.
