Beetroot
(Beta vulgaris)
Part of the Amaranthaceae family with many varieties the most well known is the beetroot but chard and sugar beet are also included and probably the best ever named vegetable, the mangelwurzel which is used for animal feed.
The beetroot we are most familiar with has a beautiful deep red/purple colour although you can get golden varieties too. The juice makes a useful magical ingredient if you are squeamish and don’t want to use blood in any of your workings…not that I do on a regular basis, I’m just saying!
The beetroot is one of passion and symbolises love and beauty and is sacred to the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite.
The beetroot corresponds to the heart chakra.
Use beetroot juice to write your love spells.
The beetroot has a really earthy flavour so they work well for grounding too.
They are particularly messy to prepare and will stain your hands red. If you want to use the property of beetroot in your magical workings such as medicine bags etc you can dry very thin slices of the beets and then grind into a powder.
Mixed with chocolate, beetroot actually makes a very nice cake.
