Witchcraft: Daily Practice - Day 31

Divination

Let us take a look at divination as a whole, with a view to daily practice prompts. If you have a favourite divination method, you can obviously use that each morning or evening, a daily read as it were. But what about mixing things up a bit? Maybe push yourself to learn a new form of divination? Investigating a new skill always kicks the magic back into gear for me. Even the process of investigating other methods of divination and researching to see what jumps out becomes part of the act of stepping back into magic. You do not need to learn it all in one day; in fact, that is never advisable. Divination skills usually take some time and effort to learn to use properly. I recently gave myself the task of learning how to read dice for divination purposes.

This was my process, but it works for most divination tools:

•             Research the method.

•             Research the type of items used.

•             Put together your own set (I used various sets of dice, such as planetary and storytelling dice).

•             Find a casting cloth that you like (if required).

•             Source a bag to keep your divination set in.

•             Focus on one dice/card/item a day to get the feel of the image and what it means to you.

•             Practice casting to learn how they fall and in what patterns.

•             Practice casting with a view to reading them.

This has all taken time, and several weeks later, I am still getting to grips with them, but it is a daily routine and a learning curve. You can follow a similar process with your chosen form of divination, and do not forget the divination forms that are out in nature, too.

Prompt:

•             Tarot and oracle cards – Choose one where the imagery speaks to you.

•             Runes – Generally associated with Norse traditions.

•             Witches Runes – A set of 13 symbols on pebbles or crystals.

•             Ogham – A set of symbols relating to trees.

•             Pendulum – Make your own by hanging a hag stone or shell onto a piece of thread or using a necklace with a pendant.

•             Crystal ball – Reading messages from the surface of a glass or crystal sphere, but it can be done with any shape crystal.

•             Scrying – The art of reading shapes and images on a reflective surface such as a bowl of water or a puddle. Try adding a pinch of dried herbs to the surface of the water or dripping wax onto it.

•             Palmistry – Reading the lines and shapes in the palm of your hand.

•             Numerology – The magic in numbers.

•             Pyromancy – Reading messages in flames from a fire or candle.

•             Nature – Look at nature around you: the shape of the clouds in the sky or the shape of tree branches; look for symbols and messages outside.
